Cupping is an ancient therapy that is modern day trending with A-listers like Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow showing off their spots in Hollywood. And pro athletes Demarcus Ware and Chris Paul swear by its swift regenerative effects that cut recovery time in half.
What Is Cupping Therapy? How Does It Work?
Cupping can be traced back to Egypt and Asia over 3,000 years ago as a pain relieving, healing practice that used bamboo “cups” and fire to create a vacuum effect on the skin surface.
Today, cupping is still used to treat and relieve pain, although the cups have been updated.
By using a gentle pressure to pull muscles and fascia upward and outward, the cups allow us to access and hydrate tissue 4 layers deep with oxygen rich blood.
The color and pattern of the marks you see on your skin after a cupping treatment will depend how much stagnation and stiffness there is in your skin and muscle tissue. You may notice anything from bright red to a dark purple lasting 3 to 5 days (or more if you are sick or sedentary). If you have a chronic injury or a past trauma, you may require multiple treatments to remove all of the stagnation and stiffness; however, the marks will become lighter as toxins are removed.
Cupping is so stimulating that healing time can be shortened by weeks or months!
